In the west the ancient art of felt-making has made a great shift of focus in recent decades, from that of survival to one of play. Witnessing what the wool fiber can accomplish while under controlled migration into a strong fabric is what puts felt into it’s own art category in the 21st century.
Surface embellishment without stitching, color and fiber blending for richness of palette and unusual three-dimensional shapes without seams are a few possibilities to consider. We will cover mark making by wool application, experience various short exercises to build a personal vocabulary and then, working from simpler, flat resist forms, apply a shift in axis and see how the object comes alive. Design by multiples will be introduced.
Our departure point will be a review of a sixteen-part exercise program of flat sampling, a two-part color theory exercise, after which we hope to complete an independent, medium-sized self supporting work employing some of the vamethods previously covered.
