In the west the ancient art of felt-making has made a great shift of focus in recent decades, from that of survival to one of play. Witnessing what the wool fiber can accomplish while under controlled migration into a strong fabric is what puts felt into it’s own art category in the 21st century.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASurface embellishment without stitching, color and fiber blending for richness of palette and unusual three-dimensional shapes without seams are a few possibilities to consider. We will cover mark making by wool application, experience various short exercises to build a personal vocabulary and then, working from simpler, flat resist forms, apply a shift in axis and see how the object comes alive. Design by multiples will be introduced.

Our departure point will be a review of a sixteen-part exercise program of flat sampling, a two-part color theory exercise, after which we hope to complete an independent, medium-sized self supporting work employing some of the vamethods previously covered.
