A Lady’s Hat

Learn how to create a sweet and simple Lady’s Hat. Five pages are dedicated to the basic art of hat-making, including 31 photographs. 13 other hats are presented to introduce variations in design and style. One of the most practical and fascinating characteristics of feltmaking is the possibility to create three-dimensional works without sewing. Learn how to layout your design motif, prepare a 2-tone wool base, control the shrinking process to form a specific shape, and study how to block a hat with a perfect brim. Other 3-D projects illustrated in this book are toys and dolls, baby boots and adult slippers, shoulder bags, berets and art objects.

Elegant Long Vest

Welcome winter in by making a warm woolen felt garment. To help you in creating wider felt fabrics this book introduces the use of a few basic tools including the bamboo mat, the washing machine, and the sanding machine. Feltmaking techniques have developed more in the last 30 years than in all of its 8,000 year history. Learn more about the history while experiencing for yourself the exciting design possibilities of contemporary feltmaking techniques. Instructions for other large works which appear in this book are entitled Fabric for Short Vests, Woven Muffler, Mohair Fabric Scarf, and Colorful Carpets.

Fabulous Felted Scarves

Felting is hotter than ever, and scarves are fabulous first projects for crafters to try. The simple process yields infinitely varied results, with rich colors, forms, and visual appeal. Created by two internationally-known designers, these 20 spectacular boas, wraps, shawls, and stoles are beautiful, wearable art. Ranging from understated elegance to simply outrageous, they come with easy-to-follow instructions, helpful how-to photos, and templates, when needed. An introduction covers all the basics, and the projects build a repertoire of skills as readers progress through the book. The standouts include a scarf with lacy designs snipped onto the felt surface; a wrap inspired by the delicate hues in Monet’s water lily paintings; and a pretty dip-dye novelty yarn party scarf.

Dip Dyed Party Scarf

This project demonstrates how fine wool fiber readily pierces sheer fabrics during the entangling process and actually joins two pieces of fabric together with non-felting “party streamers”, nylon filament Lurex caught in between.

Honeycomb Scarf

I developed this project in 2003 during a one-month hospital stay when I realized that the mind must keep moving even if the hips need to stay put for a while. Using various odds and ends of leftover novelty yarns and hospital equipment, and with the loyal aid of one assistant Atsuko Ikuno, I managed to turn a private room into a studio away from home, and so created this scarf.
Due to its unique construction, the inside colors can be seen − a stunning effect that prompts many admirers to ask, “Is that knitted or crocheted?”

The answer to which is a big “No!”
