“The artist in Japan who seems to come to American-style is Kyoto-based Jorie Johnson, a transplanted American who has been living in Kyoto since 1987. Johnson makes felt, which she discovered while studying in Finland in 1977, using an innovative layering technique allowing her to create representational motifs in the material, which she then uses for unusually shaped garments that are often conceptually keyed to the seasons.”
