Greetings from one of the best seasons in Kyoto, Autumn 🍁.

I am happy to be back from an adventurous summer in the EU, Norway, and the USA and I would like to relate a bit of that news to you...

Japan: Art OHARA

...beginning with the invitation to participate in the Art OHARA Exhibition during the month of June. It was possible to install a felt rug and mat/wall works in an old Minka Japanese Inn. Ceramic artist Momoko Takeshita Keane and I shared the space to highlight both materials, wool and mud.

Japan: Kiyomizudera Temple

Kyoto, Kiyomizudera Temple, Kyodo Hall: September 21-30, 2025 The EXPO2025 members installed several works each in the UNESCO-listed Buddhist temple. Apparently, over 13,000 guests visited in a short 10 days. Immediately the grounding vibrations of the 400+ year old building were apparent to me as I lay a rug on the floor in front of the statue treasures permanently displayed in the Sutra Hall. I had the impression that felt rugs must have been here in the past for warmth and comfort in prayer.

Hungary, Holland, Norway:
Sumi on Fabrics

Jorie’s Summer 2025 Workshops in Hungary, Holland and Norway offered the chance to reconnect and experience the current level of interest in feltmaking, Resist Area Scouring of Silk Organza, and Sumi ink on Fabrics workshops. The participants were well acquainted with the felting experience, so they were interested to take the idea of creating one’s own fabric for further lamination onto wool to a new level.

This week the Hungarian/German Online CorNit Felt Camp, hosted by Corinna Nitschmann, is running (German language only). Jorie instructs the participants on how to prep various fabrics for Sumi ink application. The addition of this natural black helps brings unique expression and new depth to a felt garment, or fine art object. In Spring 2026 the English version of this class will be offered.

Upcoming Publications & Exhibitions

Kyoto - Kyoto Journal Magazine: Kyoto Journal Magazine’s print edition KJ109 will come out mid-month. I am honored to receive the 12-page spread authored by Senior Editor Susan Pavloska in a relaxed interview over several sessions. Art Director Hirisha Mehta was a great help with selecting images to help relate the story.

Kyoto, Fushimi - Sake no Utsuwa Toyoda: December 3(Wed) ~ 14(Sun), the annual 「Art Works in Kyoto 身に纏うアート」with fellow creators Nakaya Akiko, Saitoh Hiroshi, Hisaki Tomoko, and Takagi Emα. Welcome. More information to come.
